Kochrab Ashram

Kochrab Ashram is a two-storey residential complex built in European style, located in Paldi and containing multiple buildings and garden spaces. The rooms are simply furnished and display how daily life was organized during Gandhi's residence here.

Gandhi established this ashram in 1915 upon returning from South Africa, making it his initial base for social work in India. The place soon became a hub for his movement toward nonviolent social change.

The ashram became a place where Gandhi openly challenged the social divisions of his time through daily living and community work. Visitors can sense how his ideas about equality were put into practice within these walls.

The site is easily accessible by public transportation from Ahmedabad and has designated visitor areas throughout the property. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since the grounds invite exploration and connect multiple buildings.

Gandhi paid just one rupee per year as rent for this property, which his friend Jivanlal Desai provided for him. This tiny amount reflects his personal simplicity and belief in living modestly.
