Bikaner district, Administrative district in northwestern Rajasthan, India
Bikaner district is located in the heart of the Thar Desert in northwestern Rajasthan and is governed from the city of Bikaner. The area spreads across dry desert land with scattered settlements and farmland sustained by irrigation systems.
The area was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, who developed the barren Jangladesh region into an important trade hub. This settlement brought order and prosperity to land that had been largely uninhabited before.
Rajasthani is the main language spoken here, and you will see traditional crafts like woodcarving, pottery, and weaving practiced by local artisans. These handmade items appear in homes, markets, and workshops throughout the district.
The climate is hot and dry with minimal rainfall, so visitors should bring light clothing and plenty of water. The best time to explore is between October and March when temperatures are more comfortable.
The Karni Mata Temple feeds and honors thousands of rats as part of a practice found nowhere else in the region. Visitors encounter hundreds of rodents freely roaming the sanctuary and regarded as sacred by devotees.
