Chennai International Airport, International airport in Tirusulam, India.
Chennai International Airport is an air travel hub in Tirusulam, Tamil Nadu, serving passengers from across India and many parts of the world. Three separate terminal buildings spread across the site, linked by covered walkways, elevators and escalators that provide access to different levels for arrivals, departures and transit passengers.
Air operations started here in 1954, making the site the main gateway for air travel in the Tamil Nadu region and across southern India. Additional terminals and runways were added over the following decades to keep pace with growing passenger numbers and expanding international connections.
Large murals and sculptures by Tamil artists fill the passenger halls, showing scenes from everyday life, religious themes and regional festivals. Travelers often see musicians performing with traditional instruments while families gather at food stalls to share meals before flights.
Travelers reach the site via National Highway 45 by car or taxi, or take the suburban train directly to Tirusulam station, from which terminals are a short walk away. The buildings are accessible for wheelchair users, and staff are available to assist passengers with reduced mobility when needed.
A bridge structure will carry an additional runway over the Adyar River, a solution not yet implemented anywhere else in India. This design will create space for more flight operations without further encroaching on surrounding settlements or natural areas.
