Bilaspur district, Administrative district in Chhattisgarh, India
Bilaspur district extends between latitudes 21.47° to 23.8° north and longitudes 81.14° to 83.15° east, covering 3475 square kilometers of diverse terrain.
The district belonged to the Bhonsla Rajas of Nagpur until 1818, then became part of British India in 1853 following the death of Raghuji III.
The district name originates from Bilasa Devi, a fisherwoman who established the city according to local narratives passed through generations.
The region maintains 11 administrative tehsils, 483 gram panchayats, and 708 revenue villages, serving a population of over 1.6 million inhabitants.
South Eastern Coalfields headquarters operates in Bilaspur district, making it the largest subsidiary of Coal India with numerous cement manufacturing facilities.
