Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in Mungeli District, India
Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in Mungeli District, India, covering hills and valleys across the Maikal mountain range. Sal trees and teak dominate most of the forest, with bamboo groves filling the lower slopes.
The government declared the area a wildlife refuge in 1975 and expanded its status to a tiger reserve in 2009. This decision aimed to stabilize the number of large predators in central India.
The sanctuary represents central Indian biodiversity with traditional tribal communities living in harmony with nature along the borders of the protected zone.
The reserve opens from September through June, as the monsoon season makes access difficult. Visitors should bring warm clothing for early morning safaris, since temperatures drop before sunrise.
The Manihari River flows through the reserve and supplies water to tigers, leopards, and gaur. Along its banks, visitors can often spot bird species found nowhere else in the region.
