The name comes from sixteen villages that grew together over time and came under the rule of dynasties such as the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Yadavas. The city developed into a center of trade and textile production during later centuries under different regional powers.
During the Nandidhwaj procession for Makar Sankranti each January, devotees walk through the streets celebrating the wedding of Shree Siddheshwar with Maa Tararai. The procession connects several temples and brings people together for days of singing, dancing and shared prayers.
Railway connections lead to major Indian cities, while the newly opened airport offers additional travel options. Visitors can move around the city using local buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis, which are available everywhere.
The municipal council raised the national flag here in 1930 as the first in India during the independence movement, marking a moment of defiance. This event brought national attention to the city and shaped its identity as a place of political engagement.
