Betul district, Administrative district in Madhya Pradesh, India
Betul district is an administrative area in Madhya Pradesh that spans the Satpura mountain range. This geographic position creates a natural boundary between the Narmada Valley and the Berar plains in central India.
The district came under British rule in 1818 following the British victory in the Maratha conflict. This turning point ended the reign of local rulers such as Raghavji Bhosale and marked the beginning of colonial administration.
The district is home to important Jain temples, particularly the Muktagiri complex, which remains a pilgrimage site today. These sacred spaces shape the spiritual life of the region and display architectural traditions spanning centuries.
The district headquarters in Betul city provides various educational facilities and basic services for visitors. It is helpful to inquire about local transportation options beforehand, as the region is hilly and sparsely populated.
The district sits at the boundary between tropical and more temperate climate zones, resulting in unusually varied weather conditions. Visitors may therefore encounter quite different temperatures and rainfall patterns within a short span of time.
