Gawilghur Fort, Mountain fortress in Chikhaldara, India.
Gawilghur Fort is a stone fortress perched at 1,103 meters on the Deccan Plateau with three entrance gates and defensive works distributed across its perimeter. The structure integrates the mountain's natural slopes to maximize its defensive capabilities.
The Muzzafarid dynasty built this military stronghold in 1425 as a strategic outpost. It later became a major battleground during the Second Anglo-Maratha War in 1803.
Persian inscriptions mark the gates while a mosque with carved stone lattice screens displays Pathan architectural traditions. Visitors can see how these religious and artistic elements shaped the fortress's identity.
The climb to reach the fortress follows steep, uneven steps so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Early morning or late afternoon hours offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring.
Two ancient water tanks, Devtalav and Khantalav, remain visible and reveal how water was stored during prolonged sieges. These systems show the careful planning required for extended defense.
