Anand Sagar, Religious complex in Shegaon, India.
Anand Sagar is a religious complex in Shegaon, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, that brings together temples, an artificial lake, gardens, and an amphitheater on a single large site. The different areas are connected by paths, making it possible to move between the spiritual and leisure sections on foot.
The complex was founded in 2005 by the Shri Gajanan Maharaj Mandir Trust, which designed it to serve both religious purposes and local water needs. The trust had already been active in Shegaon for decades before beginning this project.
The site is closely tied to Gajanan Maharaj, a saint deeply respected across this part of Maharashtra. Visitors can watch pilgrims moving quietly around the temples and joining daily prayers at various shrines.
Shegaon is well connected by rail, and the station is close to the complex, making arrival straightforward for most visitors. The grounds cover a large area, so it is worth setting aside at least half a day and wearing comfortable shoes.
The artificial lake is fed by water drawn from a nearby river through an engineered system, which is unusual for a site of this kind. Other parts of India have since looked at this water management approach as a reference for similar projects.
