Melghat, Tiger reserve in Maharashtra, India
Melghat is a tiger reserve in Maharashtra, India. The zone sits at elevations between 300 and 1,100 meters and contains teak forests, bamboo groves and open grassland.
The area was chosen in 1973 as one of the first nine reserves within Project Tiger. The designation followed earlier efforts by regional forest authorities to secure wildlife populations.
The name comes from the local Korku language and means „meeting of hills
Safari tours run from October to June, with early mornings and late afternoons offering the best chances to see wildlife. The trails close during monsoon season from July through September.
The Tapti Gorge cuts through the reserve and creates a natural corridor where animals move between different forest blocks. Some sections of the gorge are over 500 meters deep.
