Tso Moriri, Brackish lake in Ladakh, India.
Tso Moriri is a brackish lake situated on the Changthang plateau in Ladakh at approximately 4,500 meters elevation. The water displays a distinctive turquoise color, with snow-capped peaks creating a dramatic backdrop that reflects in the still surface.
The lake received Ramsar Wetland designation in 2002, establishing formal protection for its high-altitude ecosystem. This international recognition acknowledged the site's importance for migrating bird species and their breeding cycles.
The Changpa nomads have inhabited this region for centuries, relying on the highland pastures for their livestock. Visitors can observe how these herders move with their animals across the plateau throughout the year.
A special permit (Inner Line Permit) must be obtained from Leh administration before visiting the area. The best time to travel is May through September when mountain roads are open and accessible.
The lake operates as a closed water system with no natural outlet to other river basins. This geological feature has created an unusually saline environment compared to typical mountain lakes in the region.
