Chanderi Fort

Chanderi Fort is a medieval fortification built on a hilltop approximately 71 meters in elevation, overlooking the Betwa River valley below. Strong defensive walls, multiple entrance gates, and various interior structures make up the main features of this complex.

The fort changed hands between different rulers, captured by Babur in 1528 and later taken by Sher Shah Suri in 1540. These transfers reflect how important this location was to regional powers competing for control.

The fort contains Jain temples with carved statues of religious figures that reflect the spiritual life of past inhabitants. Visitors can observe how these structures shaped the community's daily practices and values.

You can reach the fort through two main entrances, with the Khooni Darwaza gate serving as the primary access point. Wear comfortable shoes since the climb to the hilltop is steep and the interior paths can be uneven underfoot.

The Katti-Ghatti gateway was carved directly through the rock face of the hillside by medieval builders. This cutting technique shows how engineers adapted their designs to work with the natural terrain rather than fighting against it.
