Karjat, Hill station in Raigad district, India
Karjat is a town in Raigad district of Maharashtra, situated along the Ulhas River and surrounded by forested hills and rock faces. The area shows a mix of dense forests, agricultural land, and small villages spread across the gentle slopes.
The region was historically used by Buddhist monks who carved caves into the rocks and established meditation spaces. Later, the place developed into a trading post along the route between the coastal plains and the Deccan Plateau.
The name Karjat refers to its location between hills and valleys, and today the town serves as a starting point for treks and weekend escapes from nearby cities. Local residents use the many trekking routes and waterfalls during the monsoon season, when the landscape turns green and alive.
Most visitors reach the place via the railway station, which connects well to the network between Mumbai and Pune. The best time to travel is during or shortly after the monsoon, when waterfalls are active and vegetation grows thick.
The surrounding area contains permanent film sets used for numerous Indian productions and partly accessible to visitors. Some of these sets show reconstructed streets and buildings that can be recognized from well-known movies.
