Dhar district, Administrative district in Madhya Pradesh, India

Dhar district is an administrative area in Madhya Pradesh spanning central India, covering roughly 8,150 square kilometers. The landscape is shaped by the Vindhya mountain range and three major rivers: Mahi, Chambal, and Narmada.

The region flourished under the Parmar dynasty during medieval times, leaving behind numerous archaeological sites. These remains reveal the architectural accomplishments of past civilizations.

Multiple language communities inhabit the region, and Hindu temples stand alongside Islamic structures that shape the local landscape today. People in the area keep these traditions alive through their daily worship and use of these spaces.

The district is organized into six administrative subdivisions: Dhar, Sardarpur, Badnawar, Manawar, Kukshi, and Dharampuri, with Pithampur functioning as an industrial center. Infrastructure varies across these different areas, so plan your visit accordingly.

The Bagh Caves hold ancient Buddhist monuments carved into rocky cliffs, featuring detailed paintings and sculptures inside. These artworks date from the 5th to 7th century and offer rare insight into past artistic traditions.
