Lat Masjid

Lat Masjid is a mosque in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, with a large courtyard surrounded by arcades and a prayer hall featuring four bays beneath a central dome. The complex contains several structures and displays detailed stonework throughout the building.

The mosque was built in 1405 by Dilawar Khan to mark independence from Delhi. Its construction incorporated materials from earlier temple structures.

The mosque displays a blend of architectural styles, with its eastern gate showing Jaina influences and traditional Islamic prayer spaces featuring a mihrab and minbar. This fusion of different styles reflects the diverse history of the region.

The site is accessible through Indore airport, with regular bus connections from surrounding cities. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground and prefer early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid intense heat.

An iron pillar in the mosque courtyard bears undeciphered graffiti and a Persian inscription left by Emperor Akbar during his visit. This unusual marking documents a historical visit within the sacred space.
