Galathea National Park

The dense forests of Galathea National Park extend across 110 square kilometers, encompassing tropical rainforests, wetlands, mangroves, and coastal regions on Great Nicobar Island.

The Indian government established Galathea National Park in 1992 to protect the native ecosystems and preserve the natural resources of Great Nicobar Island.

The Shompen tribe maintains traditional practices within the park boundaries, sustaining themselves through forest resources while preserving their ancestral connection to the land.

Access to the park requires a 50-hour ferry journey from Port Blair, and visitors need to obtain permits from local authorities before entering the protected area.

The park serves as a nesting ground for the Giant Leatherback Sea Turtle, which comes ashore between February and December to lay eggs along the coastal areas.
