Galathea National Park

Galathea National Park spreads across Great Nicobar Island, protecting a mix of tropical rainforests, wetlands, mangroves, and coastal zones. These different environments exist side by side within the protected area, creating varied habitats for wildlife.

The park was created in 1992 to protect the island's natural ecosystems from human impact. This status made it one of the region's most important conservation projects.

The Shompen tribe maintains traditional practices within the park boundaries, sustaining themselves through forest resources while preserving their ancestral connection to the land.

Getting there takes about two days by ship from the mainland, so plan accordingly for the journey. You will need official permission to enter and should expect basic facilities in this remote location.

Giant leatherback turtles come ashore between February and December to lay eggs in the sand. This is one of the few remaining places where this natural event still happens on a large scale.
