Kannur International Airport, International airport in Mattanur, Kerala, India
Kannur International Airport is an international airport in Mattannur, Kerala, handling both domestic and international flights through a modern terminal building. The facility features a single runway and amenities that meet international standards for passenger traffic.
Planning for the airport began in 2010 after suitable land was identified, building on earlier aviation links dating back to 1935. The region had prior experience with commercial air travel when TATA Airlines operated here.
The name refers to the nearby city of Kannur, which has long been a trade center on the Malabar Coast. People from across the North Malabar region and neighboring parts of Karnataka use the airport regularly, especially for travel to Gulf countries and other Indian cities.
The airport is located about 28 kilometers (17 miles) east of Kannur city and is accessible by road. Travelers should allow enough time to cover the distance between the city and the terminal.
The project was realized through a partnership between government entities and private investors, with Kannur International Airport Limited managing operations. This model combines public oversight with business principles in airport management.
