Muzhappilangad Beach, Coastal beach in Kannur district, India

Muzhappilangad Beach is a sand stretch along the Malabar coast in Kerala state, running several kilometers beside the Arabian Sea. Black rocks at the northern end form a natural boundary, while the wide sand surface becomes firm enough for vehicles during low tide.

Already in the 1970s, locals occasionally drove their vehicles along the shore, but only later did this become a known attraction. Growing popularity led authorities to introduce rules for vehicle traffic on the sand.

Locals call this strand after the nearby village, whose name comes from two Malayalam words referring to bamboo groves. Fishermen begin their work in the early morning hours, when the sea is calmer and temperatures remain comfortable.

The best time to visit falls between November and February, when monsoon rains have passed and the sea becomes calmer. Visitors should pay attention to tides, as the sand becomes softer at high tide and vehicles may get stuck more easily.

Paragliding enthusiasts use the thermal winds above the water to launch their flights and glide along the coast. On some days, small sharks can be seen swimming in the shallow waters near the shore.
