Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, Thalassery

Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, Thalassery, Hindu temple in Thalassery, India.

Description

Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is a Hindu place of worship in Thalassery with sanctums oriented toward the north that house multiple deities. The inner shrine contains representations of Lakshmi Narasimha, Kodanda Rama, and Venkataramana, while an outer courtyard holds separate shrines dedicated to Hanuman and Ganapathy.

History

This place of worship started as a small shrine dedicated to Kodanda Rama, founded by Gowda Saraswatha Brahmins who migrated from Goa. A larger, permanent structure was built in 1831, establishing the form the complex still holds today.

Culture

The temple is managed by hereditary Goud Saraswat Brahmin priests who follow Dwaita traditions in their daily worship and rituals. During major festivals like Brahma Rathotsava and Navarathri, the space becomes the center of community celebrations that shape local religious life.

Practical

The temple sits about 500 meters from Thalassery Railway station and bus stand, making it convenient to reach by public transport. The walk from the station is straightforward, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes since they will be removed before entering the sanctums.

Did you know?

The temple features a copper-clad Dhwaja Stambha, a ceremonial flag post where religious banners are raised during important festivals. This striking structure in the outer courtyard reflects how ritual and ceremony remain central to the temple's role in daily life.
