Mappila Bay is a natural harbor on the coast of Kannur, in the state of Kerala, India, sheltered by a defensive wall that runs from the fort into the sea. This wall creates a protected area where fishing boats can anchor away from open water.
The bay was a key trading port under the Kolathiri dynasty, linking Kannur to distant islands and overseas merchants. Over the centuries, it passed through Portuguese, Dutch, and British East India Company control, each leaving a visible mark on the area.
The bay sits between Fort St. Angelo and Arakkal Palace, the seat of Kerala's only Muslim royal dynasty. Walking along the waterfront, you can still notice traces of these different influences in the architecture and in the daily life of the fishermen.
The bay is easy to reach from Kannur town center using local transport and sits close to historic monuments along the waterfront. Visiting during the dry season gives you more stable weather and a more comfortable walk along the shore.
A partnership between India and Norway in the mid-20th century modernized the harbor and turned it into one of the leading fishing centers on the Malabar Coast. This collaboration introduced new fishing techniques to the area and changed the way local fishermen worked.
