Mappila Bay

Mappila Bay is a natural harbor along Kannur's coast, protected by a defensive wall extending from the fort into the sea. This structure creates a sheltered zone where vessels can rest safely away from rough waters.

The bay became a key trading port during the Kolathiri dynasty era, linking Kannur to distant islands and overseas merchants. Its importance as a harbor stretched across several centuries of regional commerce.

The bay sits between Fort St Angelo and Arakkal Palace, where Portuguese colonial history meets Kerala's only Muslim royal dynasty. Walking through this area, you can sense how different cultures have left their mark on the waterfront.

The bay is accessible from Kannur town center by local transportation and sits close to historic monuments along the waterfront. The dry season offers the most stable weather for exploring this coastal area.

The harbor underwent major modernization through an India-Norway trade partnership and became a leading fishing center in the region. This international collaboration gave the location a new profile and drew fishermen from nearby areas.
