Lord William Bentinck established the institution on January 28, 1835, making it the second oldest medical college teaching Western medicine in Asia after Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry.
The institution played a significant role during India's independence movement, with students participating in anti-British protests and demonstrations throughout its history.
The hospital maintains 1,881 enrolled students as of 2024, with 1,239 pursuing undergraduate studies and 623 engaged in postgraduate medical programs.
Dr. Kadambini Ganguly, an alumna of the institution, became the first certified South Asian female physician qualified for Western medical practice.
