The Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata occupies a 26-acre (10.5-hectare) site on College Street and includes multiple medical and surgical departments. The facility combines teaching hospitals with training spaces for medical students.
Lord William Bentinck founded the facility on January 28, 1835, as the second college teaching Western medicine in Asia. The institution followed only the Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry in this medical tradition.
The institution played a significant role during India's independence movement, with students participating in anti-British protests and demonstrations throughout its history.
The facility offers both medical training for students and healthcare services for patients from the region. As of 2024, it enrolls over 1,800 students in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Dr. Kadambini Ganguly graduated from this facility and became the first South Asian female physician with Western medical training. Her qualification opened the path for women in medicine across the subcontinent.
