Bangarh

Bangarh is an archaeological site along the eastern bank of the Punarbhaba River, where excavations have revealed terracotta tiles, pottery, and stone artifacts. The location shows the remains of multiple construction phases containing materials from different periods of Indian history.

During the medieval period, this site served as an administrative center for a region called Kotivarsha Vishaya. The area was part of a larger territorial division and held importance in regional governance of that time.

The site is located roughly 75 kilometers northeast of Malda town and is accessible by road from Balurghat, the district headquarters. Routes from nearby larger towns connect to the area through established roadways.

Ancient texts such as Brihat Samhita and Vayu Purana mention this location under different names from various time periods. These historical references show that scholars and writers documented this settlement site across a long span of time.
