King's Circle, Public park in Matunga East, Mumbai, India.
King's Circle, also known as Maheshwari Udyan, is a public park in the Matunga East neighborhood of Mumbai, India. It is laid out with circular walking paths around a central garden planted with native trees and shrubs.
The park was named after the British monarch George V during the colonial period, and was renamed Maheshwari Udyan in 1962. The new name marked a shift in how the local community chose to identify the space after independence.
Matunga has long been home to a large South Indian community, and this park reflects that presence in the daily rhythms of the people who use it. On weekends especially, families gather on the lawns while older residents walk the circular paths in the early morning.
The park is within walking distance of two railway stations, Matunga on the Central line and King's Circle on the Harbour line, making it easy to reach from different parts of Mumbai. The paths are open and flat, so the space is comfortable to explore on foot at any time of day.
A footbridge known as Monkey Bridge crosses the railway tracks next to the park, connecting the eastern and western sides of Matunga. Without this crossing, the two sides of the neighborhood would be much harder to reach on foot.
