Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple, Hindu temple in Legship, Sikkim, India

Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple stands along the Rangeet River and features multiple shrines devoted to different deities across its grounds. The structure rises in stages along the riverbank, with distinct areas for worship and ritual practices throughout the site.

Hindu belief holds that Shiva, pleased by Arjuna's penance, appeared here as the hunter Kirateshwar, Lord of the Kiratas, and granted him success in the Mahabharata war. Worshippers later found a stone that had miraculously manifested as a Shiva Lingam, now the temple's main object of worship.

The Kirati call the site Kirateshwar Mahadev Thaan, and the name recalls Shiva appearing as Kirateshwar, lord of the Kiratas. Bala Chaturdashi is observed in November–December and Maha Shivaratri in February or March. Devotees also come to ask for a son or daughter, and for peace and good health.

The temple lies near Legship and can be reached easily by local taxi or public transport. Bring comfortable footwear, as the descent to the riverbank involves steps and uneven terrain throughout the site.

The temple's name comes from Kirateshwar, the hunter form Shiva took when he appeared before Arjuna here. The Kirati people call the site Kirateshwar Mahadev Thaan, and the stone Shiva Lingam they worship is said to have appeared miraculously rather than being carved.
