Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada Temple

Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada Temple stands on a raised platform called Althara instead of having a traditional shrine or Sreekovil structure. The site is surrounded by stone walls and provides an open, airy setting for religious gatherings and rituals.

The temple traces its origins to ancient times when, according to local records, Duryodhana visited this place and prayed to Lord Shiva. This ancient connection continues to define the sanctuary's identity today.

The Malakkuda Festival in March brings together traditional Kathakali performances and a grand procession called Kettukazhcha with participants from seven local districts. These celebrations show how the shrine remains alive in the local community and draws performers from across the region.

The temple welcomes visitors throughout the year, and it is advisable to check on local festivals and religious dates before your visit. Comfortable clothing and flat shoes are recommended as you may walk barefoot or in light footwear on the Althara platform and surrounding grounds.

This is the only sanctuary in South Asia dedicated to Duryodhana, a figure from the Mahabharata who is usually portrayed as a villain. This distinctiveness makes the temple a fascinating place to discover alternative perspectives on classical epics.
