Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Cricket field in Uppal, Hyderabad, India
The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is a cricket field in Uppal, a suburb of Hyderabad, India, covering six hectares and offering seating for up to 39,200 spectators. Six floodlight towers enable evening matches, and the oval playing area is surrounded by several covered stands that shelter fans from sun and rain.
The Hyderabad Cricket Association opened the ground in 2004 to replace the smaller Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, after Visaka Industries Limited provided funding through an auction. Since then, it has hosted many international tournaments and now ranks among the most important cricket venues in the country.
Named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the ground draws thousands of supporters who bring drums and banners on match days to cheer their teams. Local enthusiasm for the sport shows in the lively crowd atmosphere, where families gather on the stands to share the excitement together.
Access to the ground is through several entrances, and stands are reached by stairs and ramps that help visitors find their way. On match days, arriving early helps avoid queues and secure a good seat with a clear view of the action.
The North End of the ground is called the VVS Laxman End, honoring the legendary Indian batsman when he retired from active play. This naming reminds visitors of his famous innings, especially his century in Kolkata in 2001.
