Hyderabad, State capital in Telangana, India
Hyderabad is the state capital of Telangana in southern India, spreading across several districts with mosques, temples, and old bazaars scattered among modern buildings and wide roads. Many neighborhoods have their own character, some quieter with residential blocks, others crowded with shops and food stalls that stay open late into the night.
Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah founded the city in 1591 as his dynasty's capital, and it later came under Mughal rule. By the 18th century, the Nizams governed here and made it one of the wealthiest princely states in India, lasting until independence in 1947.
Muslim and Hindu communities have lived side by side for centuries, and their festivals and prayer times still shape the daily rhythm of many neighborhoods. Markets operate as they have for generations, with vendors selling spices, jewelry, and handwoven textiles to locals and travelers alike.
The international airport sits about 25 kilometers (16 miles) outside the city and brings visitors from many countries, while the metro network connects several parts of the metropolitan area. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available everywhere, though heavy traffic means longer travel times during peak hours.
Until 2024, it officially served as the capital of two states at once, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, with separate administrations working in the same city. It also ranks among the largest film production centers in India, producing hundreds of movies each year in different languages.
