Nehru Zoological Park, Zoo in Hyderabad, India
Nehru Zoological Park is a zoo in Hyderabad that spans a large area and houses over one thousand species of birds, mammals, and reptiles in open enclosures. The animals live in areas designed to resemble their natural habitats, with trees, water features, and open spaces.
The zoo was established in 1959 and opened to the public in 1963. It grew from early efforts to protect wildlife on the Deccan Plateau.
The park takes its name from Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister after independence. It serves as a learning space where families and school groups from across the region come to understand local wildlife and conservation efforts.
The grounds are best explored on foot, with wide paths leading through different sections and accessible for visitors of varying mobility levels. It is best to arrive early to see the animals more active and to avoid larger crowds that build up later in the day.
The zoo opened the country's first butterfly enclosure in 1988. Another highlight is the lion safari, where visitors travel in secured vehicles close to the animals, separated by reinforced gates.
