Piranmalai Kodunkundreeswar Temple

Piranmalai Kodunkundreeswar Temple, Hindu temple in Piranmalai, India

Piranmalai Kodunkundreeswar Temple is a Hindu place of worship with three distinct levels called pathalam, bhoolokam, and Kailasam, each dedicated to different manifestations of Lord Shiva and his consorts. The structure reveals a thoughtful arrangement of sacred spaces that visitors explore as they move through the different levels.

The temple grounds preserve remnants of Fort Marudhu and a moat from the early 19th century when Maruthu Pandiyar controlled the region. These structures serve as reminders of the military and political history tied to the place.

The annual Brahmotsavam festival draws pilgrims during the Tamil month of Chittirai to honor Lord Shiva with processions and prayers. Special rituals at the Ugra Bhairavar shrine during the Thai month reflect the spiritual practices that shape worship here.

The temple sits roughly 88 kilometers from Trichy and about 7 kilometers from National Highway 45, with regular bus service from Madurai Mattuthavani terminal. Getting there is straightforward thanks to well-established public transport connections to the site.

The shrine houses an unusual idol of Mangai pagar crafted from nine different herbs, representing a rare piece of craftsmanship. Nearby grows a sacred tamarind tree with distinctive qualities: its leaves do not fold and its fruits fall before ripening.
