Sangrur is a parliamentary constituency in the state of Punjab, covering nine assembly segments: Lehragaga, Sunam, Bhadaur, Barnala, Mehal Kalan, Malerkotla, Dhuri, Sangrur and surrounding areas. These segments spread across rural villages and small towns in the central plains of Punjab.
The constituency was formed in 1952 as part of India's first general elections and is one of the original 13 constituencies in Punjab. Since its formation, representatives from several parties have held the seat, with political control shifting among different groups over the decades.
The constituency reflects Punjab's diverse electoral landscape with a population of over 1.2 million voters representing different communities across urban and rural areas.
Elections take place in a single phase, with polling stations open across all nine segments. Vote counting happens at central locations designated by election authorities.
A by-election in 2022 resulted in a surprising outcome after the sitting member resigned to become Chief Minister of Punjab. The result marked a shift in the region's political leadership.
