Yelluru Shri Vishweshwara Temple, Hindu temple in Yellur village, Karnataka, India
Yelluru Shri Vishweshwara Temple is a Hindu temple in Udupi district, Karnataka, housing shrines for Lord Shiva as Vishweshwara, Lord Vinayaka, and Goddess Annapoorneshwari. Each shrine sits in its own section of the grounds, so visitors can move from one to the next in turn.
The temple's origins go back more than 1,000 years, documented by twelve rock inscriptions found on the grounds that record its founding and religious role in the region. These inscriptions are among the oldest written records of a place of worship in this part of Karnataka.
The Laksha Deepotsava festival, held in November and December, fills the temple grounds with thousands of clay lamps lit at once. People travel from nearby villages to take part in this yearly event.
The temple sits directly on National Highway 66, making it easy to reach by road from nearby towns. It opens in two sessions, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, so you can plan your visit around whichever suits your day.
In the Yeleneeru Abhishekam ritual, devotees offer tender coconuts that match their own body weight as a personal vow. This direct link between the person's body and the offering is rarely seen in other temples in the region.
