Vattakottai Fort

Vattakottai Fort is a granite coastal fort in the Kanniyakumari district featuring thick stone walls with strategically positioned watchtowers. The structure covers a rectangular area and displays the defensive design typical of its era.

Built in the 18th century under King Marthanda Varma, the fort was constructed under the supervision of Eustachius De Lannoy, a former Dutch naval officer. This collaboration reflected the maritime connections that shaped the region.

The fish carvings on the walls show how important the sea and fishing have always been to people living in this region. Walking around the fort, you notice these details reflect the daily life and traditions that shaped this place.
