Thiruvalluvar Statue, Stone monument in Kanyakumari, India.
The Thiruvalluvar Statue is a stone sculpture on a small island off the southern tip of India, where the waters of three seas meet. The figure shows the Tamil poet standing upright with one hand pointing upward.
Construction began in the late 1980s and continued for more than a decade. The inauguration took place on the first day of the new millennium.
The three raised fingers of the poet represent the core themes of his work: virtue, wealth, and love. This posture makes the monument a symbol of timeless values in Tamil culture.
Ferries bring visitors from the mainland across to the island where the monument stands. The crossing takes only a few minutes and offers a good view of the surroundings.
The granite monument remained fully intact during the 2004 tsunami while destruction occurred all around. This fact is often cited as evidence of its solid construction and careful planning.
