Padmanabhapuram Palace, Historical palace in Kanyakumari, India.
Padmanabhapuram is a large wooden complex in Kanniyakumari district, India, containing several halls and living quarters. The compound shows teak pillars, carved doors with inlaid patterns, and open verandas arranged around paved courtyards.
The compound began in the early seventeenth century as the seat of Travancore rulers. Later work in the eighteenth century added new buildings and decorations as the kingdom grew.
The name comes from the nearby temple in Thiruvananthapuram and shows the religious connection of the rulers. Visitors today see courtyards with polished black granite floors and ceilings decorated with floral patterns in red and gold.
The site sits in a rural area near the Tamil Nadu border and requires walking between different buildings. Pathways lead through shaded courtyards, and rooms stay cool due to thick wooden walls and high elevation.
Some rooms have windows made from thin shell panels instead of glass that let soft light through and filter the air. This technique was common in Kerala centuries ago and is now rare to see.
