Our Lady of Presentation Church, Mathapuram

Our Lady of Presentation Church is a modern place of worship featuring concrete construction and a grotto at its entrance where a wooden statue of Mary greets visitors. The building accommodates community gatherings and regular services, with interior spaces arranged for prayer and congregation.

The site was previously called Villapatty and held a stone structure named Sumaithangai where merchants rested during trade journeys between Kottar and Trivandrum. The current church building was completed in 2017 to serve an expanding community of worshippers.

The local community renamed the area Mathapuram in 1949 after a wooden statue of Mary was installed at the church. Residents venerate this figure as Kanikkai Madha, and her presence shapes how people experience and relate to the space.

The church is easily reached on foot and the entrance is clearly visible from the main road. Morning and late afternoon visits tend to be quieter times for reflection and exploring the grounds without crowds.

A cross at the church displays the inscription INRI, hinting at potential links to the early presence of Saint Thomas the Apostle in India. This connection to ancient Christianity makes the location meaningful for those curious about how faith traditions took root in this region.
