Vizhinjam Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Kovalam, India
Vizhinjam Lighthouse is a white and red striped concrete tower standing 36 meters tall overlooking the sandy beach of Kovalam. A spiral staircase winds upward inside, leading to a viewing platform with views across the Kerala coastline.
This structure was built in 1972, replacing an older flag mast system that had guided ships centuries earlier. Its construction marked the modernization of coastal navigation in this important port area.
The lighthouse marks the maritime heritage of the region, where fishing and ocean trade have long shaped how people live and work. Visitors can sense how deeply the sea influences the local identity and daily rhythms.
Climbing to the viewing platform requires arranging access with the lighthouse staff who are on duty. The stairs are steep and narrow, so steady footing and care are needed when moving upward.
The beacon sends out a white flash every 15 seconds, with its light reaching across the Indian Ocean from a height of 57 meters. This steady rhythm has remained virtually unchanged since the equipment was installed decades ago.
