Attukal Temple

Attukal Temple is a Hindu place of worship in Thiruvananthapuram district, India. The temple complex displays carved wooden structures and a multi-tiered red roof that narrows toward the top, characteristic of Kerala temple architecture.

The sanctuary was established several centuries ago and dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. Over time, the complex expanded and took its current form with multiple shrines within the temple walls.

The sanctuary sits close to the center of Thiruvananthapuram and is easily reachable through main roads. Visitors should cover shoulders and knees and remove footwear before entering the inner areas.

During the annual Pongala festival in February or March, millions of women prepare a traditional rice dish simultaneously on open fires. This ceremony extends over several kilometers through the surrounding streets and transforms the city into a massive open-air sanctuary.
