Kerala Science and Technology Museum, Science museum in Thiruvananthapuram, India
The Kerala Science and Technology Museum is a science and planetarium complex in Thiruvananthapuram, covering topics such as electricity, mechanics, solar energy, and engineering through interactive galleries. The complex also houses the Priyadarsini Planetarium, a domed hall used for astronomy shows.
The museum opened in 1984, established by the Kerala government to bring science closer to the general public. A decade later, in 1994, the Priyadarsini Planetarium was added to the site, turning it into a broader educational complex.
The museum is a common destination for school groups and families from across Kerala, who come to try out the hands-on exhibits rather than just look at them. Many displays are designed so that visitors can turn knobs, press buttons, and see results directly.
The complex sits near PMG Junction in central Thiruvananthapuram, making it easy to reach from most parts of the city. It is closed on Mondays, so it is worth checking before planning your visit.
The Priyadarsini Planetarium takes its name from a popular nickname of Indira Gandhi, the former Indian prime minister. Having a working planetarium attached directly to a science museum is uncommon in South India, making this one of the few places in the region where visitors can do both in a single trip.
