Shankumugham Beach, Beach in Thiruvananthapuram, India

Shankumugham Beach is a wide, flat stretch of dark brown to black sand on the western side of Thiruvananthapuram, about 8 km from the city and close to the international airport. The sand meets the Laccadive Sea at a gently curving line, where a band of white surf and small breaking waves marks the shore. The beach surface is smooth and largely featureless, with no structures or signs on the sand itself.

Shankumugham serves as the Arattukadavu of Sri Ananthapadmanabhan, the presiding deity of Thiruvananthapuram. On Arattu day, idols of Padmanabhaswamy, Narasimha and Krishna are carried here to the Laccadive Sea, led by the titular Maharaja of Travancore with the royal sword. A 2022 study recorded erosion of 4.73 metres per year, forcing the Shankumugham-Airport road along the beach to close.

Shankumugham serves as the Arattukadavu of Sri Ananthapadmanabhan, the presiding deity of Thiruvananthapuram. On Arattu day, idols of Padmanabhaswamy, Narasimha and Krishna are carried here for a ceremonial bath in the Laccadive Sea, led by the titular Maharaja of Travancore with the royal sword. Hindus also perform Bali Tharpanam here, and the beach is the main site for Ganesh Nimajjanam at Ganesh Chaturthi.

Shankumugham lies about 8 km from Thiruvananthapuram city centre, next to the international airport, and KSRTC buses run from East Fort bus stand. One route goes via Palayam, the University of Kerala, Pallimukku, Peta and Chacka; another via Perunthanni, Vallakkadavu and Valiyathura. Coastal erosion of about 4.73 metres a year closed the Shankumugham-Airport beach road, so check the current approach before setting out.

The mermaid is Sagarakanyaka, carved by sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman; it measures over 35 metres and lies on the sand rather than standing upright. The beach also holds the Jawaharlal Nehru Park of Traffic Signs for children, where small children can practise cycling.
