Thiruvananthapuram district, Administrative district in Kerala, India
Thiruvananthapuram is an administrative district along the southwestern coast of India within the state of Kerala. The district combines coastal lowlands with forested highlands and passes through rubber plantations, coconut groves and small rural settlements across its territory.
The area served as the heartland of the Kingdom of Travancore for centuries under local rulers. Following Indian independence it was reorganized into an administrative district within the newly formed state of Kerala.
The district maintains Kerala classical dance traditions through regular performances of Kathakali and Mohiniyattam at local cultural centers and temples.
The district can be reached through an international airport, several railway stations and a dense bus network. The coastal road connects most larger towns and runs along the sea through different landscapes.
The district sits close enough to the equator that day length barely changes and the sun rises and sets at nearly the same time throughout the year. In some coastal parts fishermen still haul their nets using traditional wooden catamarans that have kept the same design for centuries.
