Kerala Government Secretariat, Administrative building in Thiruvananthapuram, India.
The Kerala Government Secretariat is an administrative building in Thiruvananthapuram organized into three main blocks situated across the central, north, and south areas of the complex. Multiple government departments operate from offices distributed throughout these sections to handle state affairs.
Construction started in 1869 under Chief Engineer Walthew Clarence Barton, who integrated Roman and Dutch architectural styles into the design. The original structure, known as Huzur, was repurposed as the Government Secretariat following Indian independence in 1949.
The main entrance, Ana Kavadam, leads into the Durbar Hall, a space where the last ruler of Travancore once held ceremonial events that marked important occasions.
The building sits about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Trivandrum Central railway station and KSRTC Bus Terminal, making it accessible by public transport. Trivandrum International Airport is approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away for those arriving by air.
The building houses a wide range of government departments under one roof, from Agriculture to Tourism, serving as a central administrative hub. This concentration of different ministries in a single location creates an operational efficiency that many visitors do not immediately recognize.
