Hauz Khas, Residential neighborhood in South Delhi, India
Hauz Khas is a residential neighborhood in South Delhi district that combines medieval ruins with modern shops and restaurants across its layout. Much of the area sits beside the old remains of Siri Fort and spreads around a historic water reservoir.
The water tank was built between 1296 and 1316 under Alauddin Khalji to supply residents of Siri Fort. Over the centuries the area transformed from a military supply point into a residential district with international presence.
The name means royal water tank and recalls the original medieval reservoir, while today young people walk along lanes between galleries and designer shops. The village side with its narrow paths draws artists and visitors who gather in small workshops and cafés.
Administrative offices along M.B. Road provide public services for residents and visitors. Several police stations in Malviya Nagar and Saket cover public safety across the area.
Five diplomatic missions from Albania, Iraq, Guinea-Bissau, Burundi, and North Macedonia maintain their offices in this neighborhood. This international presence adds a political dimension to the area among the residential streets and shops.
