South Delhi district, Administrative district in Delhi, India.
South Delhi district is an administrative division in New Delhi with three subdivisions: Saket, Hauz Khas, and Mehrauli. The area stretches from the southern boundaries of the capital to the urban villages on its edge, covering both densely built residential neighbourhoods and open green spaces.
The district emerged from the division of Delhi into four major administrative units during the 1970s. In September 2012, the structure was reorganized to better manage the growing population and improve public services.
The neighbourhood of Chhattarpur contains one of India's largest temple complexes, where visitors can walk through sprawling courtyards with carved pavilions and water features. Families gather in Lodhi Gardens on weekends to picnic on the lawns or stroll through the 15th-century ruins.
The district headquarters in Saket on M.B. Road serves as the main point for administrative matters. Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and Indira Gandhi International Airport offer connections to other parts of the city and country.
The district is home to both IIT Delhi and AIIMS, two of the country's most important educational and health institutions. About one fifth of the area consists of parks and reserves that serve as green lungs for the densely populated capital.
