Deer Park, Public park in Hauz Khas, India
Deer Park is a green space in Hauz Khas built around a large water tank, home to a herd of spotted deer that wander freely among visitors and lawns. Narrow paths wind through wooded sections and open meadows dotted with small pavilions and benches for resting.
The grounds originally belonged to a learning center built during the rule of Sultan Alauddin Khalji in the 14th century to supply water to students and teachers. Later the area was redesigned as a public park and the deer were introduced in the 20th century.
Families stroll along the water's edge in the morning, watching their children observe and name the tame deer wandering through the grass. In the early evening, groups gather for stretching exercises or simply sit on the lawns beneath old trees.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset and has several entrances distributed around the grounds. Most paths are level and easy to walk, with shade under trees especially welcome during the warmer months.
Peacocks walk among visitors and often display their feathers near the stone ruins on the eastern edge. Some deer have grown so accustomed to people that they come close to the paths and wait patiently for walkers to pass.
