Hidimba Devi Temple, Dhungri Manali

Hidimba Devi Manali is a Hindu temple in the Kullu district of India, set among cedar forests and built in a multi-tiered pagoda style. The wooden doors feature hand-carved motifs, while the pointed copper roof rises above the surrounding tree canopy.

The structure was built in the 16th century under Maharaja Bahadur Singh, who dedicated it to the deity Hidimba. The architecture reflects the traditional wooden construction of the Kullu region, which developed over centuries in mountain villages.

The name comes from Hidimba, a figure in the Mahabharata epic, whose footprint on a stone inside draws worshippers who bring flowers and small offerings. Devotees walk around the sacred stone while priests chant mantras and burn incense throughout the day.

The walk from the parking area follows a short forest path that can become slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes help. Early morning hours work well for avoiding crowds and experiencing the quieter forest surroundings.

The massive rock formation inside forms the natural foundation of the entire structure and is considered the original place of worship. Unlike other temples, there is no conventional idol here, only this ancient stone with the engraved footprint.
