Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, Agricultural irrigation infrastructure in Kaleshwaram, Telangana, India
The Kaleshwaram system sits in northern Telangana and lifts river water through several stages to reach farming areas. The infrastructure distributes water through canals and pump stations across a broad stretch of dry land.
Construction began after the formation of Telangana state in 2014 to improve water supply for fields. The system started operating in 2019 and changed irrigation possibilities across the region.
The irrigation network supports farmers in Telangana by enabling year-round cultivation and connecting agricultural communities through shared water resources.
The system draws water from the Godavari River and lifts it through a series of pump houses to higher ground. Visitors can see the outer parts of the infrastructure but should be prepared for distances between locations.
The project uses pumps that move water to heights between 330 and 1,970 feet (100 and 600 meters) to reach dry plateaus. The Mallanna Sagar reservoir ranks among India's largest artificial water storage sites and plays a central role in the system's water cycle.
