Amkhoi Fossil Park is a nature reserve in Ilambazar that displays petrified tree remains across landscaped grounds with walking paths and information boards. The site spans roughly 10 hectares and allows visitors to explore these ancient fossils while learning about the region's prehistoric landscape.
The fossils were discovered in 2016 during pond excavation by local residents and date back roughly 15 to 20 million years. These findings from the Miocene period reveal the existence of ancient forests that once covered this region.
Local women groups manage the park facilities, including a cafeteria and sales center, maintaining the natural heritage of their region.
The park is best explored on foot, with marked paths guiding you through the grounds to where the main fossils are displayed. It helps to read the information boards beforehand so you can better understand what you are seeing as you walk.
The petrified remains come from ancient flowering plants in families such as Dipterocarpaceae and Anacardiaceae that grew in this region. These botanical fossils provide clues about which plant species thrived in this area millions of years ago.
