Al-Arba'een Mosque, Grand mosque in Tikrit, Iraq
The square-shaped mosque spans 36.5 by 35.5 meters and features five domes constructed with gravel and plaster materials.
Built in the 5th century AH, the mosque contained shrines for Amr ibn Jundab Al-Ghafari and Sitt Nafisa until its destruction in 2014.
The mosque functioned as an Islamic university in 1262, serving as a center for religious education and scholarship.
The structure includes multiple rooms rising ten meters high, with a cellar area beneath the main building complex.
The name derives from a local belief that forty martyrs rest beneath the mosque grounds, though historical evidence remains limited.
