Al-Arba'een Mosque

Al-Arba'een Mosque is a square-shaped building in Tikrit measuring roughly 36 by 35 meters and features five domes constructed from gravel and plaster. The structure contains multiple chambers rising about 10 meters high, with a cellar area underneath the main building.

The mosque was built in the 5th century after the Hijra and served as an important Islamic center in Tikrit for centuries. The building was destroyed in 2014, after which restoration efforts began.

The mosque served as a gathering place for religious scholars and students who came to study and share knowledge together. This made it an important center of learning in the region.

The site is located in Tikrit's older quarters and can be reached on foot when walking through the central areas. It helps to check local conditions beforehand, as the building has undergone restoration work following previous damage.

The name comes from a local belief that forty martyrs are buried beneath the ground, which shows the depth of religious devotion at this site. This tradition continues to shape how the community views and values the mosque.
