Tikrit, Historic city in north-central Iraq

Tikrit sits on the western bank of the Tigris and serves as the capital of Saladin Governorate in central Iraq. The settlement follows the river for several kilometers and forms a key urban center between Baghdad and the northern regions of the country.

The settlement grew into a fortified center during the tenth century, housing a large Christian monastery and developing a trade in wool textiles. In the twelfth century, the military commander Saladin was born here, later founding the Ayyubid dynasty that ruled across much of the Middle East.

The University of Tikrit, established in 1987, stands as one of Iraq's major educational institutions, contributing to the academic development of the region.

The location along the Tigris provides access to riverbanks and different urban neighborhoods following the waterway. The local airport connects the city with other parts of Iraq, making arrival more straightforward for those traveling by air.

The University of Tikrit was established in 1987 and ranks among the larger educational institutions in Iraq. It draws students from across the region and adds an academic dimension to daily life in the city.
