Arak

Arak is a major city in Iran's central region, situated roughly 260 kilometers southwest of Tehran. It rises at an elevation of 1738 meters and is surrounded by mountains that define its mountainous landscape.

The city was founded in 1808 as Sultanabad by Yusef Khan-e Gorji and was initially protected by a fortress with thick walls and eight towers. It later evolved into a center of industrial production, transforming its entire character.

The name reflects an ancient region, and carpet weaving has been rooted here since the late 19th century as a significant craft. Sarouk rugs from this area remain known today and continue to shape local artisanal traditions.

The city is connected to major Iranian destinations through its airport established in 1938 and a railway station on the Trans-Iranian railway network. Visitors have multiple options for arriving and getting around the area.

The city transformed from a military base into Iran's industrial center, now producing steel, aluminum, petrochemicals, and heavy machinery. This shift made it an economic powerhouse for the nation.
